Gathering Tank

This shirt represents why I first fell in love with anthro: it's a t-shirt but so much prettier! Considering that in the good old days I would have paid full price for this shirt, the fact that I got it on sale makes it so much more attractive. I ordered an XS, which fits well in the bodice area and enhances a flat chest, but wonder if a S would be more forgiving in the troublesome muffin-top area.

The pros: 100 percent cotton, machine washable, color, pretty design, comfortable
The cons: Very fitted in the stomach region: How much will this area bulge after a day of eating?
The verdict: Undecided: I'm hoping this will stretch a little, as it's made of slub cotton, so I can eat in this shirt. Eating versus Shirt? Eating wins every time.

Whirligig Dress Review

I ordered the Whirligig dress in navy with some reservations, because I had tried it on before at the store in the XS raspberry color. The wrap bodice felt too overwhelming and complicated. Maybe the particular dress I tried was cut too big. Or maybe the lighter color made the wrap detail too pronounced. Good thing I gave it a second chance at the sale price because the navy version looks really good! Perhaps this dress is cut smaller, the style looks more subtle in navy, or the sale price lowered my expectations. In any case, I'm glad I gave it another try. I'm always afraid these jersey dresses will be too clingy or look too slovenly but this one has a waist and shirring in all the right places. It's soft as a nightgown but it's a dress!

Pros: Clever draping good for flat-chested women, comfortable, machine washable, classic color
Cons: Rayon/nylon blend (I usually prefer cotton) but it's made by Velvet so good quality (two layers)
Verdict: A keeper!

Orchard Grove Pullover Review

The shape of this sweater looks like a beginning knitter's project:

For reference, you're looking down at the back of the sweater, the gray band at the bottom of the picture is the waist band. If you look closely, you'll find that the left arm hole and the right armhole are cut differently. The left side fits comfortably because there is 18 inches of fabric between the armhole and the waist band. In contrast, the right side only has a mere 7 inches between armhole and waist band. As such, when you lift your right arm, your movement is restricted. If you lift your arm too high, the waist band will lift, exposing your stomach. Many reviewers have pointed out this weird right-arm situation.

However, a handful of reviewers did not have this problem. I think if you are normally an XS and ordered the S (because this sweater did not come in an XS) then the extra material helped alleviate the arm-restriction problem. I fell into this category, and it's not the end of the world if the waist band lifts because I would wear a tank top under this sweater.

I really like the cowl neck, which I find very flattering for small-chested women. I also love the asymmetrical modern style (tres Japonais!). Unlike horizontal stripes, the diagonal stripes do not widen your figure. The orange and gray color scheme go with denim or white.

The pros: cowl neck, asymmetric design, cotton/linen (hand wash)
The cons: weird right arm
The verdict: I can deal with the right arm for the sake of fashion. A keeper!

Apothecary Skirt Review

Based on the advice of other reviewers to order up a size, I got the size 2, which fit just right. The elastic waist sits high on the waist. I usually like white t-shirts with printed cotton skirts but the neutral print has a little gold in it so I can see it playing well with plum or teal. Although the skirt is not too puffy, it would sit better if it didn't have an elastic waist. I think this skirt looks better with your shirt tucked in but then you would have to hide the elastic waist with a belt. a) I never tuck in my shirt. b) Having to hide the elastic band seems like too much trouble. Why couldn't they have put a normal waist band and zipper on this skirt?!

The pros: 100% cotton, neutral print, not too puffy
The cons: elastic waist, high waist
The verdict: I so wanted another cotton skirt to wear on warm days (my anthro mermaid skirt needs a day off!) but tucking and belting seems to go against the idea of a carefree summer wardrobe. It's going back.

Rhythmic Repetition Dress Review

Part of my anthro purchase arrived in two days! The size 0 fit, but the waist is very short on me. If you look closely at the picture, you'll see the waist hits my rib cage. Maybe I should have ordered a size 2--but then the chest would be too big. Although the wide straps at the neck balance the full skirt, the short waist combined with the pleats around the stomach area make me concerned that people will wonder if I'm pregnant. I so wanted this dress to work, either by itself or with my yellow crochet cardigan by Guinevere.

The pros: halter style; 100 percent cotton, machine washable
The cons: short waist; stiff material; dark print for summer dress
The verdict: I really wanted to try the halter style but I can't live with the short waist on this dress. It's going back.

Week of 7/5 Sale

The Rhythmic Repetition Dress caught my eye this morning. After reading the glowing reviews and doing some research online (the dress has been worn by Dianna Agron's character on "Glee"), I clicked the "add to bag" button. I also threw in some other items to take advantage of the free shipping promotion.

Rhythmic Repetition Dress $69.95

Orchard Grove Pullover $49.95

Apothecary Skirt $49.95

I've had really good luck with dresses from Anthropologie. I recently nabbed the Summer Grown Dress online and even my husband approved. It has a great Parisienne feel. I can't wait to wear it to a wedding in August!
